MUSHROOM DOWELS
If you fancy having a go at making your own logs rather than the ones premade, why not try with some of our easy to use dowels. Simply drill the appropriate number of holes in the wood you wish to innoculate for the number of dowels you have. Tap them in with a hammer and wait for the log to be taken over by the appropriate mushroom spawn. A word of warning though, there are some provisos when doing this, as you will need to provide the correct type of wood for the appropriate dowels. This means in general you will have to:
1 - Be able to identify the correct type of timber to accompany the type of spawn (rule of thumb is hardwood, healthy in nature, and with a diameter of between 4"-8" (or over 12" for Chicken of the Woods). We recommend that the length of log is between 50cm and 1 meter.
2 - The timber should be freshly cut, and the wood should be innoculted within 6 weeks of being cut. Ideally, you will also not innoculate the wood within 2 weeks of being cut (as timber contains a natural fungicide that needs to die off).
3 - Each type of mushroom has its own growth parameters, and as such will require a different type of care. Each kit will be supplied with its own set of species specific instructions how to best care for your log / stump whilst it colonises.
For tree species required for each mushroom type, please refer to the chart at the bottom of the page. When considering timber choice, it is follows that hardwoods of greater densities, such as oak, take longer to produce fruit, but will sustain flushes over many more years than lower density wood, such as silver birch.
We have 10 dowel varieties available:
Shiitake
Oyster (broadleaf)
Oyster (conifer)
Lions mane
Enoki
Chicken of the Woods
Reishi
Maitake
Coral
Turkey Tail
Please also be aware that dispatch of some dowels may take upto 28 days. We ask then that if you require dowels urgently you email us first to check availability. Thank you.
