These are a list of common questions that we are asked about our products...
If the answer you need is not here please contact us - we'd be glad to help! For information about Mushroom Log care - please see here Do the logs actually work!?Well, having been asked this so frequently we thought it should be included! If you think about mushrooms naturally occurring in the forest and provide your logs with a similar habitat shade & moisture - there is no reason why your log shouldn’t produce loads of quality mushrooms. As with all plants, the logs are influenced by climatic and environmental conditions - so a little care, especially during hot summer months, goes a long way. But, bottom line is that our logs are guaranteed to work if properly cared for and you can read about our customers successes here: Testimonials

How long will it be till I get my first crop of mushrooms?
Different wood and different mushrooms take differing lengths of time to first appear. As a general rule, crops in softer woods (like Silver Birch) will flush much sooner than those in harder woods (such as Oak). On the flip side the harder woods will typically last for more seasons and so produce more crops in the long run.
The list below includes a rough guide to cropping and colonising times.

Will the mushrooms spread into other nearby logs?
Although possible, on the whole the mushrooms won’t easily spread to other nearby logs. The reason being that very soon after a tree is cut, many different strains of fungi and mould begin to colonise it and only the most aggressive survive. Our logs are inoculated soon after felling whilst still sterile - this ensures that only the chosen mushroom variety has a chance to colonise the timber.
NB. We advise you never to eat mushrooms from other wood stocks unless you are 100% able to properly identify them first.

Are the mushrooms edible?
All our mushrooms varieties are edible and mostly delicious. We do not produce any inedible or poisonous strains.
NB. Some of the medicinal varieties are definitely not valued for their flavour!

ALLERGY ADVICE
It is estimated that 1-2% of the population are allergic to mushrooms but a larger proportion (approximately 10%) are potentially allergic to Chicken of the Woods. For information, this is broadly comparable to 15-20% of the population being wheat intolerant.
When trying a new variety of mushroom for the first time we recomend testing with a small amount before eating larger quantities.

Do the logs only produce one crop?
If maintained properly your log should provide you with a few years of flushing.
Softer timber logs will produce for approximately 3-5 years. Harder timber should produce for approximately 4-8 years.
Softer woods such as birch & pine will produce their first flush sooner, but hardwoods such as oak will produce for longer.
The logs will tend to produce about one fifth of their weight in mushrooms during their lifespan.
