Ganoderma Lucidum Common / Usual Names: Reishi Mushroom AKA Lingzhi mushroom Description: The Reishi Mushroom enjoys special veneration in Asia, where it has been used as a medicinal mushroom in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 4,000 years, making it one of the oldest mushrooms known to have been used in medicine. The word lingzhi, in Chinese, means "herb of spiritual potency" and has also been described as "mushroom of immortality". Because of its presumed health benefits and apparent absence of side-effects, it has attained a reputation in the East as the ultimate herbal substance. |
Shen Nong's Herbal Classic, a 2000-year old medicinal Chinese text states "The taste is bitter, its energy neutral, it has no toxicity. It cures the accumulation of pathogenic factors in the chest. It is good for the Qi of the head, including mental activities... Long term consumption will lighten the body; you will never become old. It lengthens years."
Due to its bitter taste, Reishi is traditionally prepared as a hot water extract. Thinly sliced or pulverized Reishi (either fresh or dried) is added to a pot of boiling water and simmered.

Turkey Tail InformationLatin Name:
Trametes versicolor Common / Usual Names: Turkey Tail Description: Formerly known as Coriolus versicolor and Polyporus versicolor this is a polypore mushroom which can be found throughout the world. Versicolor means 'of several colours' and it is true that this mushroom if found in a wide variety if different colours. T. versicolor is called Turkey Tail in the United States because of its resemblance to the tail of the wild turkey. T. versicolor is recognised as a medicinal mushroom in Chinese medicine under the name yun zhi. In China and Japan T. versicolor is used as an immunoadjuvant therapy for cancer. The United States' top ranked cancer hospital, the MD Anderson has reported that it is a 'promising candidate for chemoprevention due to the multiple effects on the malignant process, limited side effects and safety of daily oral doses for extended periods of time.' |

Maitake InformationLatin Name:
Grifola frondosa Common / Usual Names: Maitake Mushroom AKA Hen of the Woods, Ram's Head and Sheep's Head Description: The Japanese name "Maitake" means "dancing mushroom". G. frondosa should not be confused with Laetiporus sulphureus, another edible bracket fungus that is commonly called chicken of the woods or "sulphur shelf". Maitake is perhaps best known for recent medical research surrounding particularly cancer treatment. A human trial conducted by Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center, showed Maitake could stimulate the immune systems of breast cancer patients. Research has shown Maitake has a hypoglycemic effect, and may be beneficial for the management of diabetes. |

Coral InformationLatin Name:
Ramaria stricta Common / Usual Names: Coral Mushroom Description: The picture here is of Ramaria stricta, but the Ramariaceae are a family of fungi in the Agaricales order of mushrooms. Collectively, they are commonly known as coral fungi due to their resemblance to aquatic coral, although many other names including antler fungi, finger fungi, worm mold and spaghetti mushroom are sometimes used for similar reasons. Edible Coral fungi should be cropped whilst young; as when older, these fungi become fibrous, dry and woody. |
